Royal Caribbean prides itself on having cutting-edge experiences for all ages aboard its ships. From incredible water slides and pools to immersive experiences - and the Adventure Ocean, a special area of the ship for kids, is no different. This work saw the foundational creation of immersive storytelling, where children actively partake in the decisions and actions of the characters.
Starting from scratch, we created the overall concept, character design, art direction, game design and production of what became a 7 story series - one for each day of the week. Each story includes about 10 minutes of animation with 2-3 interactive games or story decisions along the way. Over 20 children are able to join in, each receiving a custom controller prototyped and built in-house. The controllers connect to the game using a custom array of HTC Vive trackers.
World creation was paramount to the project, including focus grouping character design and rigorous testing of interactions and story flow. The experience has become a mainstay on 4 different Royal Caribbean ships, and a key part of Adventure Ocean builds for the next years. Lulu and Mika have also risen to a level of popularity including plush toys that can be purchased on the ship, and a special safety briefing just for kids. Over 10,000 children have played the game to-date.
